Japanese color print depicting scenes from everyday life, the dominant art form in 18th- and 19th-century Japan. Aiming to satisfy the tastes of the increasingly affluent merchant classes, ukiyo-e artists employed bright colors and strong designs, made possible by improvements in block printing, and featured actors, prostitutes, and landscapes among their favored subjects; over a quarter of all the illustrated ukiyo-e works produced were erotic works. Hiroshige, Utamaro, Hokusai, and Suzuki were leading exponents. The flat decorative color and lively designs of ukiyo-e prints were later to influence many prominent French avant-garde artists.
