Ulam
(1909-1985) Polish-born US mathematician. He was a member of the Manhattan Project, which produced the first atomic bomb, 194345, and from 1946 collaborated with Edward Teller on the design of the hydrogen bomb, solving the problem of how to ignite the bomb. All previous designs had collapsed.
Ulam was born and educated in Lvov (now in Ukraine). On the invitation of mathematician John Von Neumann, he emigrated to the US 1936 and joined the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton.
